Water is one of the fundamental resources for life to exist.
Water is one of the fundamental resources for life to exist.
Water is present in everything alive, but it is also present in all the products and services we consume.
In other words, we can say that water is everywhere, even where you can't see it. It is used in the production of food and beverages, household appliances, plastics, paper, as well as for power generation, in offices that provide services and even to have internet. Almost everything around, us has used water at some point in its process.
Only 0.01% of the world's water is potable and its distribution in territories is not equitable, since 36% of the world's population lives in water-stressed areas. Knowledge of the use and distribution of water becomes essential in order to find better ways to make it more efficient and make a less unequal distribution. One of the tools that allow us to know this information in detail is the water footprint.
The water footprint is an indicator that can be used to measure the amount of water required to produce the goods, products and services we consume. This helps us to answer questions about the use of water in various sectors, reflect on the regulation for its protection and distribution, as well as reduce our water consumption.
From the Sustainable Tourism Circuit, we promote water saving among our members,
first listening to and learning from each member organization of the circuit, which they
are implementing in their businesses to save this precious resource, and then finding
new possibilities for savings together with them. And, the members of the Circuit who
were not committed to this issue, we motivated them to do so, through awareness and
training in different programs that we are creating and offering, but also through the
experience and testimony of the member companies of the Circuit that have already
implemented improvements in the business to save water.
